Stephen is a lawyer at Shift Law specializing in trademark and copyright litigation. His practice includes representing clients before all levels of the federal and Ontario courts and in trademark opposition matters before the Canadian Intellectual Property Office. Stephen also regularly advises clients on intellectual property clearance issues. Stephen articled at Shift Law before being called to the Bar in Ontario.
Stephen has in-depth knowledge of and familiarity with the latest best practices in electronic discovery which he has applied while successfully representing clients in complex copyright and trademark infringement litigation involving many thousands of documents. Stephen also has expertise in using best in class litigation workflow management software to assist in the timely, organized and cost-effective management of intellectual property litigation matters.
Stephen graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School. During his time at Osgoode Hall, Stephen was a Contributing Editor, and later a Senior Editor with the IPilogue, Osgoode’s intellectual property and technology blog. Stephen was also a Clinic Fellow with the IP Osgoode Innovation Clinic, which provides pro-bono legal information services to start-ups, entrepreneurs and small business.
Before graduating from law school, Stephen worked in-house with the legal department of a Canadian music licensing company and completed a 10-week internship with the in-house legal department of a leading Canadian media company. Stephen won first place in Canada’s IP Writing Challenge 2018 for a research paper on the application of copyright law to artificial intelligence technology in the creative industries.
Stephen is a lover of music. He is a guitarist, collector of vinyl records, and has a keen interest in music technology. Stephen is also a avid cyclist and can be found riding his bike to work, or out on the trail with friends.
