Toba Cooper Shift Law

Toba Cooper is an associate at Shift Law. Her practice focuses on trademarks, copyright, new media law, internet advertising and intellectual property litigation.

Toba has experience in the prosecution and enforcement of trademarks and copyright and provides strategic advice on brand development and protection. Toba also has experience in the CIRA and UDRP processes for domain name disputes. Toba has extensive experience preparing IP-related contracts, website terms of use and privacy policies.

Toba graduated with distinction from the University of Ottawa's faculty of Common Law where she focused her studies on intellectual property law. She completed her third year at Osgoode Hall Law School. During law school Toba acted as a research assistant, supporting and contributing to the authorship of a major legal publication on solicitor-client privilege. She also conducted a focused study on curators and copyright. Before entering law Toba completed both a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Fine Arts and worked in the field of commercial arts for 7 years.

Prior to joining Shift Law, Toba articled in the intellectual property department at a large, full-service Toronto Bay Street law firm.

Toba's professional and community involvement has included:

  • membership with the Toronto Lawyer's Association;
  • lecturing on intellectual property law;
  • acting as regional project officer for the Ontario Justice Education Network;
  • planning and organizing community holocaust education events; and
  • fundraising for SickKids and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada.
